26 July 2021- Northern Rivers screen facilities provider Byron Studios has joined Ausfilm, furthering its development in the sector’s production and facilities ecosystem, and extending its reach with the international production community.
Byron Studios, which operates studios across the Northern Rivers region, was founded by Cumulus VFX Founder Will Gammon in 2016 with associate Mark Holden to address the need for world class studio facilities, technical expertise, connectivity infrastructure and specialised crew in the region.
Ausfilm CEO Kate Marks said, “we are delighted to welcome Byron Studios as a new Ausfilm Member at this crucial time for the industry which is enjoying unprecedented demand for production services and facilities nationally and regionally. We look forward to promoting Byron Studios to the global market."
Byron Studios currently offers four distinct studio facilities, catering to a range of production needs, budgets and locations around the Northern Rivers areas of Alstonville and the Byron Bay industrial estate. The Alstonville studio complex contains two soundstages (975 sqm (10.0m high) and 400sqm (4.5m high)) with vast pillarless spans that have provided clients including Netflix with the opportunity to create sound stages of modular size and scale.
Netflix and Melissa McCarthy’s On the Day production company were the foundation clients at the Alstonville studio, recently completing filming on the series ‘God’s Favourite Idiot’.
Netflix’s APAC Director of Production Policy Debra Richards said the need for strong infrastructure will continue to grow alongside the increasing global demand for content.
“Australia has always had a great reputation for punching above its weight when it comes to the screen industry. It was an excellent opportunity recently working with Byron Studios, and this investment in world class infrastructure will leave a long term legacy in the Northern Rivers region and Australia,” Richards said.
Byron Studios are working closely with Ballina Council to develop a new state of the art studio complex in the Ballina/Alstonville area that will create a future destination and media precinct for the National and International Film and Television Industry.
PwC Australia has completed a Feasibility Report on this project and is currently engaged to deliver the Strategic Business Plan for the proposed new studio complex hub.
“We are very fortunate to be in the position of making our dream of creating a globally competitive state of the art studio in the Northern Rivers a reality,” said Byron Studios Founder Will Gammon.
